Journalists, members of Digital First Media and pretty much everyone else who wants to - are going to be taking part on the weekly Twitter chat at noon, Eastern Time.
Today we're talking about maximizing time and prioritizing your social media presence online and how that can better serve your journalism.
What social networks should you be paying attention to?
Should you join every new social network that comes out?
What social networks are indispensable for news organizations?
Which ones are not that necessary in your field?
For instance, see the image above. Seene is a really cool new app/network that lets you take 3-D photos. But its network or application uses in journalism are limited, at best.
In conclusion, I just wanted to post a 3-D photo of my cat.

Through the Google Glass (and journalism) - Part II
A recent accident on Washington and Hurley avenues in Kingston, N.Y. captured through Glass. |
Google Glass is making us rethink the way we consume and produce news.
The promise.Google Glass — the high-tech wearable augmented reality device— has the potential to reshape journalism for both consumers and producers.
I should know. I’m a journalist.
So when Google opened its Glass “Explorer” program, in which a group of people would be selected to get a pair, I applied on Twitter using the hashtag “#ifIHadGlass,” sending a pitch about why I should be chosen to be one of the 8,000 experimental participants. Here's a recap of that:

Through the Google Glass (and journalism): Part I
Getting to where news should be
The sceneI imagine a scenario in the near future (of news).
Google+ embedded poss means you can embed Google Glass video posts
This is good. And like embeddable public Facebook posts, this also means that you can now embed Google Glass images posted on that service.
With Google+, now you can embed Google Glass videos as well.
This is very good.
This can have some positive ramifications for news coverage presentation on sites, which is very exciting. It is my aim to explore those possibilities.
There is a caveat, however, and that is that the embedded post is the preview of the video, in the form of an animated gif. Clicking on it takes the very large (!) video.
So it's not quite the whole enchilada, but it's still pretty good.
SO, in the meantime, embeds!

Now you can (almost) post gifs to Facebook
The claim is that you can now post animated gifs on Facebook.
The cool kids at NowThis News got very excited.
Breaking GIF News: You can now post animated GIFs to Facebook using @Giphy http://t.co/zYQmT5DKSZ
— NowThis News (@nowthisnews) August 29, 2013
The uncool kid in me forces me to say this: Not quite.
Although you can post a giphy link and play the gif on Facebook (like playing a Youtube video), it's not like posting a gif directly, like you can on Google Plus or Tumblr (OHAI News Cat Gifs!)
I admit, it is still pretty cool (and less intrusive, I'd imagine).
@ivanlajara We are savoring the moment, with or without a play button ; )
— NowThis News (@nowthisnews) August 29, 2013
And then I remembered something cooler. You can MAKE your own gif with the gifboom app (WARNING: Contains teenagers) from your phone and share it on Facebook. And the result will be the same:
Not crazy about Gifboom? You can do the same with Cinemagram, and pretty much anything else.
And yes, you can embed Facebook posts. That's soooo yesterday.

Jimmy Fallon showcases Daily Freeman's most excellent juxtaposition
Saugerties high school grad Jimmy Fallon gave a shout-out to his 'hometown newspaper' (I think it's called the Daily Freeman), during a segment called "Screengrabs: Jimmy Shares His Favorites Sent in by Viewers." over at 'Late Night' yesterday.
The fun starts at the 3:30-minute mark, but you just might want to watch the whole thing.
The culprit was a most excellent juxtaposition between a headline and a photo on a most controversial Catskill Mountain Rail Trail story.
Watch the whole segment.
PHEW! I thought it was going to be a typo.
